Lessons in Publishing 2: You are not your work
You are not your work.
Do not confuse the two. When you are producing books, you will receive rejection and criticism. It is imperative to distance yourself now. When you send a query, the agent or editor will not be judging you, personally. You are not trying to sell yourself in any way. Your material should do all the talking.
This is a hard lesson to accept when you start writing. Some writers believe that, if published with the right publisher, they will be launched into stardom. Nothing could be farther from the truth. How many times have you saw Stephen King or Patricia Cornwall on a talk show? How many “celebrity” magazines feature your favorite authors the same way they do actors or rock stars?
They don’t.
Is writing glamorous? Rarely. Should that prevent you from pursuing a career? If it does, you aren’t in the right profession.
